Today, the Forward Air Controller mission is performed by the A-10 Warthog (oops, I mean the Thunderbolt 2). Back in Vietnam, it was flown by the O-2A Skymaster. The Warthog pilot has lots of armor, a huge gun, and lots of external ordinance. The Skymaster pilot had target marking rockets, radios and lots of guts.
